Dog Fence

My son came into the room when I was sewing one day and asked if we could make another quilt for a kid in the hospital.  Absolutely, kid!  I looked for a nice simple project that he would enjoy.  About a year and a half ago, my friend Snow gave me a bunch of dog fabric.  I cut it into common pre-cut sizes, including 10" x 5" rectangles found in a Jolly Bar.  I thought Fire Monkey would enjoy the dog fabrics.

I had a charm pack of Kona white that I pulled out for this project.  I told Fire Monkey how many rectangles we needed and let him pick out his favorites. He pulled every dalmatian fabric! This one is his favorite:

My favorite is this fun Halloween dog print.

The pattern is Picket Fences from The Jolly Bar Book.  (The Jolly Bar pre-cut is exclusive to the Fat Quarter Shop but I bought the book so I can cut my own.)  It was a great pattern to do with Fire Monkey because it goes together really fast.  His favorite part is picking which fabrics to put together.  Sometimes he sits with me at the machine and sometimes he likes to stand next to me, and occasionally he gets on the floor to watch my foot on the pedal!

This is the third quilt we've made together and the second that is a donation quilt.  With our Project Linus chapter closing, we'll take these to a children's hospital in the area on our own.  I'm so glad he likes to sew and wants to make quilts for other kids!

This was #15 on my list of Q3 goals for the Finish Along.  I'm also linking up with UFO busting hosted by Tish of Tish's Adventures in Wonderland.

  1. Great idea, Em, for featuring all those fun dog prints! That's great that your DS is really getting into it. What kid doesn't love dogs!

  5. So wonderful that he wanted to make another quilt. You should let him push the pedal. :-) and maybe stitch a seam or two!

  6. What a great project to work on together. The SIT never wanted to learn to sew, but she does enjoy "consulting" on my projects. Congrats on a fun filled shared finish.

  7. What a great way to instill a sense of giving back to the community to your son (who is adorable, btw). He did a fabulous job picking out the best fabrics and I'm sure any child that will receive this quilt will love it.

  8. This post sends quite a ripple of pleasure clear down to my toes. Not only do I love to see children show an early interest in sewing, especially boys, I find it heartwarming when l learn of littles who have a growing sense of compassion. You’re certainly doing something right!
